As a squad we have lots of fun together. We are very serious when it comes to providing the professional care our residents need, and have come accustomed to, but we also have a lighter side. We are regular people with regular jobs, just like you. We chose to be a part of the Rockaway Neck First Aid Squad family. Every year we have get togethers where members, past and present, enjoy each other’s company. More often than not, we all see each other while on a call or at our monthly meetings and drills.
Most people seem to think we apply band-aids to boo-boos and are trained in CPR or we are just “drivers”. Well, my friends, we are that and a whole lot more too. We are essentially the first link you will have to the Emergency Department of the hospital. We are fully trained professionals in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) field of medicine. We go through rigorous training, hold drills and scenarios to keep our knowledge and skills current in today’s every changing world of EMS.
To become a member and be a part of our family, it takes dedication and the willingness to constantly learn and grow as an individual and as a part of a team. The first step is to talk to an officer or member of the squad and see if EMS is for you. There are several steps of training that are required. You will need to know CPR and you will need to take and Emergency Responder Course. There are 2 courses available. First Responder and EMT. All of these courses would be FREE if you join the squad for a minimum of 1 year.
Not everyone’s cup of tea is riding the ambulance and training for a life in EMS. With that in mind, maybe you could help us in other ways. Maybe you are an electrician, or a carpenter, or a plumber, or a landscaper who would be willing to donate your time and skills. Maybe you or your company would be willing to donate something for a raffle of a function. Or maybe you are someone, or you know someone who may be able to help us in some other way.
The satisfaction you gain from helping others in their hour of need is immeasurable. Give us a call or stop by the building to find out more. The best time to reach someone is Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:00PM and 10:00PM.
